Brisbane Sporting Dog Club Inc

      located in Queensland, Australia

Historical Overview: The Brisbane Sporting Dog Club began in October 1989 when 12 dog owners came together to train in Schutzhund. In November 1989, the then president of the Australian Schutzhund Association, Mr Karl-Heinz Pahl, was flown from Adelaide to give a 2 day seminar and workshop. This was followed by a 4 day workshop in April 1990 which was opened up to all interested parties.

With the invaluable help from these seminars, the members began to prepare to compete in a Schutzhund trial held in Adelaide in 1990. Being self-taught trainers, the group had some setbacks and stumbling blocks - the first group of dogs must be highly praised for the adaptability that they showed, responding to the many changes their handlers made to their training styles and methods! Ten foundation members headed for Adelaide with 5 dogs and 1 bitch. The group attended a workshop the weekend prior to the trial, further increasing their skills and overcoming their weakneses. They entered the trial with the simple hopes of passing. The outcome: Of the 6 dogs entered, 4 qualified for SchH1! And, these 4 dog-handler teams placed 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th out of the 17 dogs entered! The dog who placed 1st at this level also placed 2nd overall - only 1 point behind the SchH3 dog that was overall winner. These results, while competing against far more established clubs from all over Australia, proved that the foundation members had emerged as trainers in their own right.

The club's first trial was held in August 1991, and the club continues to hold annual trials often with overseas judges such as Gottfried Dildei, Vic Wilms and George zum Felde. In 1994, 3 members gained the first SchH3 titles  in the state of Queensland. Several seminars and workshops from internationally respected trainers from America and Europe have been held by the club, with interested outside parties in attendance.

In 1998 Gottfried Dildei (USA) presented a workshop, and in August 1999, Armin Winkler (Canada) presented a protection workshop. In 2000 Ivan Balabanov (USA) presented a 3 day seminar.
